On Thursday 7th our hockey team went to Holcombe Hockey Club to play in the Mini Youth Games tournament. This year the entry was huge with 38 schools turning up (getting in and out of the car park was a challenge) the largest ever hockey entry.
Competition was stiff but we made a good start by winning the first 3 of our 8 games and it was a delight to see the players developing and really trying out ideas that we had been working hard at in practice. So much so that we were complemented for our flowing style of passing hockey by several of the umpires and officials at the tournament.
Our fourth game was our only slip up losing 2-0 to Cedars. This was a tough game which was 0-0 till the last couple of minutes when they got their two goals in quick succession.
Now it was time for lunch and, re-invigorated, we got back to our winning ways and so it continued. Our final match was an absolute thriller against a very strong Wainscott side, in the end there was nothing to separate the two teams and honours were shared 0-0.
Our figures for the day are played 8, won 6, drawn 1 and lost 1 with 17 goals for and 3 against.
The team were a delight to be out with not just for the super hockey they played but because of the way they listened and learned to new ideas and the way they behaved in such a sporting manner all day.
We finished in a fantastic 6th position out of 38 and have qualified for the Night 0f Champions event later in the year where the top 8 from the this tournament will play each other in a knockout format.
