On what was officially the hottest day for years Miers Court were really proud to have two teams representing Medway at the Kent Schools' Games Finals at Holcombe Hockey Club. We were there with our year 3/4 team and our year 5/6 team.
The two tournaments ran side-by-side and both teams were playing at the same times but on different pitches which made supporting both difficult however the parents who were there did their best and we kept in contact throughout the day.
Our younger team found the standard was much higher from our local tournament but settled very quickly despite losing their first game 4-0. From there and into the afternoon they improved constantly and even won two of their games in the afternoon. We are really looking forward to developing more with them next year as they are already in the top 16 schools in Kent. Thank you to Roger Pope for looking after the team so enthusiastically and encouragingly all day.
Our older team had a fantastic morning, winning all of the games comfortably and only conceding one goal all morning, there was some outstanding teamwork throughout the morning. Over lunch, discussions were had as to whether to carry on because of the heat and then we went into a group of three, all the morning's group winners played each other in a round robin to decide the top three places. First was a very tough game against a fabulous Dover side who beat us 5-1 and went on to be worthy winners. Finally we played the Sevenoaks school and had a really tight and exciting game, 30 seconds from the end the score was still 1 all when Sevenoaks broke away and scored a last second goal. What a game to end with and everyone gave their all. We finished 3rd, that is 3rd in the whole county of Kent.
I couldn't be more proud of both teams and am looking forward to the younger players carrying on the exciting work of the current year 6s.
