Our hockey team are Medway Champions. By finishing in the top eight of the Mini Youth Games they qualified for Medway's Night of Champions Festival. This was held at Holcombe Hockey Club.
Having had some practice against some of the same teams in the schools' league recently with mixed results we tried to go into this competition with a new focus and positive mindset. We couldn't believe it was the same team at first. They played strong, intelligent and competitive hockey.
The quarter final was against All Saints and, after a first half where we took a while to settle, we won that 3-0 setting up a semi-final with arch-rivals in hockey, Hempstead. The game was played at a frantic pace with end-to-end play and with 2 minutes to go and the score 1 all some positive attacking play won us a penalty which was duly converted to win the match 2-1.
So to the final, Lordswood. A strong and competitive team. Again the pace was lightning fast with both teams' defenders making outstanding last-ditch saves and tackles to keep their team in the game. This carried on through normal play and four minutes of extra time. Penalties! Thank you to everyone who volunteered to take them and well done to all five who slotted their penalties home with no fuss to win 5-4 and lift the trophy.
It was an excellent final.
Also I would like to congratulate all who played in the league at Anchorians coming fifth.
A special mention too to our year 3/4 team who, for the first time ever at Miers Court, entered the Medway Quick Sticks tournament. They lost both of their games very narrowly but look a fantastic prospect for the school and for hockey for the future.
